Tourism Arrivals – Nov 19: Persisting downtrend
During November, arrivals from Europe were not encouraging. Higher Euro vis-a-vis the Rupee attracted more French tourists who increased their visits by 8.1%. Nonetheless, German arrivals were down by 5.1%. In the same vein, Briton arrivals went down by 13.2% despite the higher pound. On the Asian side, arrivals were down. The two-digit contraction in arrivals from our Chinese market persisted, standing at 10.6% last month. Indians followed suit with an 11.4% fall. Arrivals from Africa were mixed. South African visits were 22.2% lower while Reunionese ones were 10.4% higher. Overall, tourist arrivals in November 2019 were 2.7% lower than November 2018.

Tourism Arrivals - Oct 2019
During October, arrivals from Europe were not encouraging in spite of favourable currency. Despite higher Euro vis-a-vis the Rupee, German visits were down by 13.1% and French arrivals went up by only 2%. In the same vein, Briton arrivals went down by 13.0% regardless of higher pound. Coming to Asia, arrivals were mixed. The two-digit contraction in arrivals from our Chinese market persisted, standing at 34.2% last month. Nonetheless, after several months of retreat, Indian visits went up by a remarkable 28.1%. On the African side, arrivals were down. South African visits were 12.9% lower and Reunionese followed suit with a 5.1% drop. Overall, tourist arrivals in October 2019 were 3.8% lower than October 2018.

Tourism Arrivals - Sept 2019
During September, arrivals from Europe were mixed. Another month of lower Euro vis-a-vis the Rupee has discouraged Germans who reduced arrivals by 6.6%. Nevertheless, French tourists have still remained faithful to our island, increasing their visits by 14.6%. Despite a higher pound, British arrivals were down by 8.4%. On the other side of the globe, the two-digit downtrend in arrivals continued to prevail. The contraction in arrivals from our Chinese market stood at 49.5% last month. Indians followed suit with a 14.6% drop in arrivals to our island. On the African side, arrivals were mixed. While South African visits remained at par, Reunionese visits went up by 4.9%. Overall, tourist arrivals in September 2019 were 2% lower than September 2018.

Morose Monday
Investors are still busy celebrating Easter. Mr. Market was deserted and traded on thin volumes throughout the floor. MCBG was helped by local investors and rose slightly to Rs276 (+0.1%) on meagre volumes along with SBMH which gained 0.7% to Rs5.88. ENL Limited and NMH maintain their downfall to Rs34.70 (-0.1%) and Rs18.55 (-1.3%) respectively. Elsewhere, gainers’ list included Bluelife (+2.5%), CIEL Limited (+0.3%) and Innodis (+3.0%).
