Tourism Arrivals - Dec 2018
During December, tourist arrival from Europe was lower than the previous month. The ongoing uncertainty hovering over Brexit has caused a depreciation of the pound against MUR in December also, thereby leading to a 9% drop in Briton arrivals. The Germans followed suit by noting a 15.8% fall in arrivals. Nonetheless, French visitors increased by 5.9% with a stabilization of the fears around a rise in the cost of living.
On the Asian side, Indian arrivals faced another month of fall, noting 5.9%. The downtrend for China has continued, being 28.4% this time.
A remarkable improvement has been noted for Africa. The ‘yellow vests’ protest situation which had badly impacted Reunion Island in November has been under control in December, explaining the 136.5% increase in arrivals. Nevertheless, it is worth noting that only 14,642 Reunionese visited our island in Dec 2018, compared to 15,867 in same month of 2017. Arrivals from South Africa in Dec 2018 v/s Dec 2017 has grown by a decent 12.8%.
Overall, tourist arrivals went up by only 1.6% in December compared to the same period last year.
